PRE-TESTING STUDIES
Pre-testing means comparing the performance of several tests/diagnostic protocols in identifying a target organism
The EURL for Insects and Mites carries out pre-testing studies of tests/diagnostic protocols published in scientific revues. The aim of this activitiy is to select the best performing test and to submit it to a full validation study. This is done for regulated pests for which no reference diagnostic protocols are available such as those published in international or regional standards by the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) or the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization (EPPO). Please note that tests subject to pre-testing are not to be considered as recommended by EURL under any circumstances. Only a full validation study can lead to a recommendation for use.

The 12 labors of Heraklion
EVENT CONCLUDED
The IVth annual workshop of the EURL for Insects & Mites was held in Heraklion, Greece, on October 19, 2023. The workshop gathered 33 guests on site and 55 other participants on line (Annex II). All the 26 EU NRLs attended. European Commission, EFSA, EPPO, EUPHRESCO and Agroscope (NRL Switzerland) were represented, and we welcomed as an external guest Alain Roques, entomologist at INRAE. Twelve slideshows were given. These included the EURL activities conducted in 2022-2023, guests presentations and self-presentations by Cyprus and the Netherlands NRLs. Two presentations were devoted to the recent reports of Spodoptera frugiperda in Cyprus and Greece. The whole session was registered. The recording includes the discussions and the questions that were collected on the online Q&A channel. This third proficiency test is organized in 2023 by the Agence nationale de securité sanitaire, de l'alimentation, de l'environnement et du travail (Anses), as part of its activities as a partner of the European Union Reference Laboratory (EURL) for Insects and Mites. The purpose of this test is to evaluate the participating laboratories on their capacity to implement the EPPO PM 7/003 (3) standart (or any equivalent method) to identify the adults of T. palmi.
